Many people are hooked on the drug called shopping. In fact, most people spend about 10% more than they earn regardless of their income. This excess spending is financed primarily through credit cards. This runaway spending leads to a very tight budget as credit card payments increase. And a tight budget can lead to stress and other physical problems.
It is easy to say that you should reduce your spending, but once you are hooked on the shopping drug, it is a hard habit to break. So what is the best way to break this cycle? Following are a few tips to help to help you get your financial life back in order.
1. You should begin by keeping track of all expenses. Carry a small notebook around with you and make a note of everything you buy. Most people are surprised at the amount of money that they spend on little unnecessary items that they really don’t need.
2. Leave your credit cards at home. If you don’t have them with you, you won’t be tempted to use them.
3. Limit the amount of cash that you carry. You don’t need to carry around a lot of cash. If you don’t have any intentions of shopping, carry only the cash that you need. That includes parking, tolls, gas, and a small amount for emergencies.
5. No more impulse buying. Before you leave your house, make a list of items that you intend to purchase while you are out. If an item is not on the list, you cannot buy it.
6. Cancel any credit cards that you do not use on a regular basis. You know, like the credit cards that are for stores located 50 miles away that you haven’t used in 3 months. If you haven’t used it in three months, you probably don’t need it. So get rid of it and you’ll have one less temptation.
Just implementing these 6 easy steps can go a long way in helping you to get your spending habits under control.
