Good friends of mine started an online business some time ago. Like most people, they started out full of optimism and enthusiasm. But after a month of hard work and few sales, that enthusiasm began to fade. The reason for this is simple; they focused on the wrong things. They paid a developer big money to come up with a fancy website with all the bells and whistles. They paid for their own merchant account and the best shopping cart system. They bought it as a package and spent several thousand dollars for it.
They believed in the old saying from that movie, “If you build it they will come.” Well unfortunately, that only works in the movies. Generating traffic and developing an online business takes some combination of time, effort, and money. My friends would have been much better off if they had built an average looking website and spent the bulk of the money on traffic. You can get a ton of traffic with five or ten thousand dollars!
And unfortunately, they didn’t even attempt to build a list. If they had focused their attention on list building and committed just half of the money on developing traffic and a large list, they would have an enduring business that generates big money every month. Instead, they have a very attractive, but very lonely site.
So take a lesson from my friends. If you have money to commit to a new online business, focus on the things that matter. I’m not saying that you should put up a crappy looking site, but an average site with great traffic will win out over the fancy site with average traffic every time. Make sure that you commit some of your budget to developing traffic and a list. A good list will ensure that your business will thrive for many years to come.
